Chelsea Businesses Chosen as "Best In Michigan"

Those of us who live in Chelsea know that there are some fantastic businesses here in town. Well, it's good to see in print that we are not the only ones who know this. Some of our local businesses have recently been chosen as "Best of Michigan Businesses" by readers of Corp! magazine.

I don't know if this recognition gives the recipients anything except good press. But it's certainly a good reminder in this somewhat depressing Michigan economy there are many businesses in Michigan that are doing well and are certainly worth celebrating. Congratulations!

Here is the news release in its entirety, and I have highlighted some of our local folks in red (let me know if I missed any!).

Corp! Magazine Announces Companies Named by Readers as 'Best of Michigan Business'
Companies to be honored Feb. 19

WARREN, Mich., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's largest business
magazine, Corp!, asked its readers to name which businesses they considered
the "Best" in Michigan. And 1,000 readers responded with their opinions and
praise for businesses throughout the state.

The "Best of Michigan Business" winners will be celebrated at a
breakfast program on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at MSU Management Education Center in
Troy. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast and networking, followed
by an awards program and concluding at 10 a.m. The nearly 300 companies
that were named a "Best of Michigan Business" will be featured in the
January/February 2008 issue of Corp! magazine. (See following list.)

Readers were asked in a poll to name the best businesses in a variety
of categories including: health care provider, banks and credit unions, law
firms, small business and family business.

Other categories included firms specializing in staffing, accounting,
commercial and industrial real estate, technology, marketing and public
relations, manufacturing, sports and entertainment, retailing, grocery,

They obviously didn't check out the "New Chelsea Market." (I hate the name, but whatever.) It's like having a scaled-down Whole Foods right here in town. Jeff the butcher is wonderful; I'm so glad he decided to stay on as the meat counter guru. We're lucky to have such a fine grocery within walking distance of the residential areas.

I totally agree, Sarah! I love the "new" Chelsea Market. I am not on a first name basis with the butcher yet though! LOL

During the holidays I went in there to see if per chance they had gourmet gift baskets. Well, not only did they, but I was able to say "Here is my budget, here is what I'm thinking." And they chose all the items for me in a Michigan food and wine theme (at my request), and all I had to do was come back and pick it up. That was probably the easiest -- and best -- present I purchased for anyone this year.

Good Blog even though you are a Chelsea fan. By the way I have acused Didier Drogba of diving on my blog. Check it out!

Well, Huddersfield Town Fan, you'll be happy to know that the teams here in Chelsea, Michigan USA don't compete with your team so I can cheer right along with ya. Thanks for visiting my blog!

I love how I inadvertently get international exposure on the chelsea-mi.com website and my Chelsea blog due to the fact that there are so many Chelsea's in the world! I get emails fairly often from soccer/football players in other countries who are interested in playing for the Chelsea (presumably UK) team. I try to be as helpful as possible, but I'm guessing they don't want to come to Michigan to play. :-)

Jeff the butcher is great! He'll cut any piece of meat any way you want it. When I wanted a full 3-lb beef tenderloin, he cut one for me. When my husband needed a full beef flank-- a huge hunk of meat-- he set one aside for him and even charged him a seriously reduced price for what ended up being about 10 lbs of meat. When I needed some beef shanks because I was making beef stock from scratch, he not only cut some extra-thick pieces right from the leg for me, but threw in two pounds of raw bones for free because, as he said, "that's where all the flavor comes from!"

The whole Chelsea MI/UK thing is especially fun when it comes to my Chelsea football posts; without any other more specific search terms, I fall behind scads of websites about the popular soccer team in England.

Of course, it would probably be the same if I wrote about Manchester football, too...

Sarah - He is right about those bones being great for stock! Speaking of soup, I made the BEST chicken noodle soup using a chicken from the Chelsea Market. It was so good that I made it again the next week using a grocery store chicken, and it was good, but not nearly *as* good as the first.

P.S. The super simple recipe came from one of my favorite blog people: Traditional Chicken Noodle Soup from Dave, aka Lunar Pier Cook, in Monroe County, MI

Burrill - Yes, I can imagine that would be a frequent occurrence on your blog as well. Reminds me of when my sister (who is now working in London, England) told me she was moving to a new place in Chelsea. Only joking, but I said, "REALLY?? We can do lunch!"

As a side note, I'm now curious where Chelsea, Michigan got it's name. I have vague recollection that it was from Chelsea, Mass.

Thank you for putting Butterball Farms as one of the best Businesses in Michigan. However Butterball Farms Inc. is not a retailer it is a Manufacturer. Where did you find the information that it was a retailer?

Thank you for the note. The source of the business list is from Corp! Magazine. The link can be found in the content of the blog post, and here is a quick click for your reference:
