The River Gallery is seeking submissions of outdoor sculpture for Chelsea's first annual year long “Sculpture Walk Chelsea.” The selected sculptures will be secured on cement pads at ten, high profile downtown locations in beautiful, historic, Chelsea, Michigan (located 14 miles west of Ann Arbor).
Artists are invited to submit up to three works. SculptureWalk Chelsea is funded in part by the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority in collaboration with the City of Chelsea, the Chelsea Center for the Arts, Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights, and River Gallery. All sculptures must be able to endure the outside weather conditions typical of Michigan. Ten finalist will be selected, and each artist will receive a $200 compensation.
The postmark deadline for submissions is May 1, 2009. The event will launch June 25, 2009. Click here to download the application from the City of Chelsea website.

What kind of artwork can we expect at only $200 a pop?
Good question! But I would expect that the artwork will come from local and up and coming artists who have a good sense of marketing and self-promotion and want their work on display year-round in a well publicized community art show. It might also come from established artists and sculptors who think it's a cool idea and want to be part of a relevant and important project to promote the arts. Just a guess. :)
Same reason that established and well-known musicians and performers are thrilled to take part in Chelsea's Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights. They do it because they love it, not to become millionaires.
I am sure the artwork will be of high quality. The project has a professional to jury the exhibition. Leslie made a very good point about the opportunity this presents to the artists to obtain exposure. The artwork isn't being purchased for $200. This is compensation only to help the artist cover their transportation costs. If the sculptures are not purchased by the end of the year, they are returned to the artist. This is a yearly event that will bring in new sculptures each time. It will be great for business and will beautify our downtown area. I am very excited about the idea.
